DETAIL OF PUBLIC SHOWER

After presentation, we recognized that the public shower informations are not very clear that others could not very understand our idea. 

The public shower would be built beside the train station and available in outdoor train station. Taking shower fee: commuters could use their EZ-link card for entrance the public shower facility, if commuters already travel the train could enter public shower for fee. 

For the entrance, it looks very familiar with toilet logo but if you see carefully, you could recognized that is not a same logo.  

There is a place for tapping EZ-link card in the entrance.

Like the public toilet, there have a big mirror and already all stuff for taking shower.

FINAL SOLUTION

Finally, we had chosen public shower facility for the best method. It sounds quite odd in Singapore but actually public shower is very popular in other countries. In this project, we inspire the Japan style public shower because with the crowed population of Singapore, the big bathtub would easier to let people take a bath or shower and no need to wait too long. Here is the public shower with Japan style that i searched on the internet.

Honestly, public shower is familiar for me or somebody who reads comic or cartoon of Japan. Therefore drawing public shower is not really difficult.

Since there might have some peoples do not like take shower in the bathtub so there also have some showers on the wall. 

DEVELOPMENT OF 5 IDEAS FROM 101 SOLUTIONS

From 101 solutions, my group have chosen some ideas to solve the unpleasant smell in trains. 

1. Door man in entrance of train station: This man will spray for you if you had a strong odor. 

2. Public shower : the reason causes people become smelly mostly is sweat so there has a public shower beside the train station.

3. Sliding window: with the sliding window, the trains will be able circulate with the air from outside.

4. Air fresheners: like putting air-con, the air-fresheners will be built aim to absorb and decrease the strong odor in the trains. 

5. Small holes on train's glass panel: this method would make the ventilation from inside of the trains. 

101 SOLUTIONS

101 solutions was not be able done with group mate because i was not at class that day so this mind-map was made by myself and it will be put in with solutions of my group member. Anyway, thinking for 101 solutions is not easy but i did draw down every possible method.

CASE STUDY - SECONDARY RESEARCH

Research Methodologies:
For this research, there are some trains that we inspire, is Virgin train of UK, Path of US, and Rapid train.
Virgin train is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by Virgin Group and Stagecoach that has operated the InterCity West Coast franchise since 9 March 1997. Although Virgin Trains is set to spend £3.5 million on a project to refresh the entire fleet of locomotives in an attempt to get rid of the lavatories smell lingering around the train but there are still number of commuters think it is not work in solving bad smell problem because of toilet in train.

PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) is a rapid transit railroad serving New Jersey and New York. It is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Due to operating hour daily is 24 hours, commuters often smell strong unpleasant odor in the train even they can taste it over their tongue.

OBSERVATION

Observation
Smelly people mostly do not know they have an unpleasant smell but people around them do. Perhaps they got use to their smell already. Here are some cases that can find recently in train.
Tobacco case: uncle A smoke as usual, his body has an unpleasant odor and he did get use to this smell for a long time. When he gets in the train, this smell is not very strong but still can make people around him uncomfortable because of his breath. His look does not messy but because of smoking more than 20 years, his tooth look not so clean. Since nowadays the busy life takes people easily to get stress so smoking in young age case increases little by little. Objects of smoking is not only adult, there are too young girls in nice dressing also have tobacco odor.

To solve this problem, people should know the consequence of the smoking may make people be the victim of cancer.
Make-up : Mrs. B, make up and use perfume everyday. Due to strong perfume so when she gets in the train, the smell spread that made someone sneezed. She looks quite nice and cleanliness but perhaps she does not know that she is one of the reasons make the train smelly. This case have seen very usual becase keeping a good look is very important in work in nowadays. 

To solve this problem, the very strong perfume should not be allow sell in the market. By the ways, shoppers should let people know how to use perfume in right ways. 

Place without wind : Mr. C, worker, because offent work in the hot place so getting sweat frequently. When he gets in the train, even though he did change the clother before but he still had an body odor. He looks nothing wrong, because of tired after work, he just keep quiet till the train takes him to his destination or call someone to chat when the train running. 

To solve this problem, goverment should have a break place and fan for each team worker if they work in hot place (e.g place in the sun, street, underground, room of building, etc)

In this week, i would like to show the result of our survey. There are 54 people did the survey totally and most of them have strong agree with us ideas.

This result shows that the problem of traveling with SMRT train is too crowded in peak hour the most, therefore they had to face with unwanted situations. To solve the problem, first at all we should know what the commuters thinking, and what they most want to if it could change.

This survey content is about the smelly people in the train (what). Aim is find more informations of reasons lead people get smell (why).
Besides, we also have to do interview, case study, and observation/ experience.

EMPATHY

Since i am a commuter of SMRT, and student as well so i am quite understand their feelings. Actually, smelly people is not because they are not keep clean, there are too many reasons take people get smell in the train.

For the businessman, for getting good-looking and best impression with customers, as employers of companies, they have to dress long-sleeve shirt and long trousers in working days. 

For teenagers, schools often have a lot of sport activities for students aim to let them can have healthy life. In research, teenagers is one of objects easier get sweat. Actually, everybody can get sweat but it is especially common in teenagers and pregnant women because of the changing hormonal. 

For case of smelly feet, it is a very very common problem nowadays. In medical term, it calls "bromodosis". In working place and studying place as well, wearing slippers is not allowed. In another words, people mostly need to wear cover shoes frequently. Basically, the feet is a part which have more sweat than another body parts because it concentrates sweat glands. In addition, when the feet get wet in the shoes for a long time, it would has a bad smell. 

Within these problems under hot weather, people catch the bus/train, when they get in the train, their body is ready got sweat, especially is people have their own health problem, they are easier get sweat than healthy people. I do not mean bad about people who has health problem, i just mean that perhaps they become easier to get smelly is because using the chemistry thing like perform, cosmetic, hair gel, smoking, etc, very usual. Due to i also have a part-time job so i am very clear about that make up is also an important thing for workers. Singapore is one of the tops modern countries in Asian, i know, impression takes a very big part in work in Singapore. By the ways, the working life of Singaporeans are often very busy, sometimes they get no time to make sure their odours, perform is used usually while they leave home, because of using perform, when they get sweat, the mixing of perform and sweat makes an odd odour. I remember one time i was got close with a good-looking boy because of the crowd in the train, i smelled that was a odour of perform but it got a little bit odd smell as well. At first, i thought he is very rude because of leaving home with this smelly, but on the second thought, it maybe just because he got sweat after catching the train. I think he did not know he got this smell at all. Besides, we should understand them instead of a bad view.

DESIGN PROCESS - MINDMAP

In the first lesson, each group has to choose a problem and the way to solve it and we have chosen "Smelly People In The Train".

For this week, I have done the research about the reasons and the solutions of problem. By the way, I also share my feeling and my experience. Even though It is not very far from my home to school but the timing that I go to school is the rush hour so there is always have a lots of people in the train. I know that "smelly people in the train" is possibility.

Firstly, according research, Singapore is known the country located near equal of the earth that the temperate is among 25 and 30 degree. The weather mainly is sunny day and rainy day so it is hot and humid usually there. For this problem, the government had the solution which increases the number of air-refresher and air-condition everywhere. 

Secondly, Singapore is a populous country, and also has a big number of the tourist every year. The crowded problem in there is happened frequently, especially in peak hour and mostly concentrated in center places.

Thirdly, having own vehicle is not an easy thing in Singapore because the price is too high. Therefore, most of people there go to work or somewhere by bus or SMRT train. 

Although, SMRT train is built for reducing trafic jam but there are anothers problem in the train. 

People like to travel by train because it is very convenience, the train runs so fast, and the price is cheapest than other vehicles. 

To easier get more understanding of problem, we must find out the causes, the thinking of the train users (commuters), informations of the trains, etc. The first thing we should do is creating a mind map, it is very important for us to develop the ideas of design.
